Cockatiel Care Guide: All You Need to Know

These charming Cockatiel parrots are named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. They are known for their distinctive crest and the vibrant orange cheek patches that adorn their faces. With proper care, cockatiels can enjoy a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, making them a wonderful long-term companion.

Housing Your Cockatiel Parrot

A spacious cage is essential for your cockatiel’s well-being. Ensure the cage is large enough to allow your bird to spread its wings freely. A minimum cage size for a single cockatiel is 24 inches (61 cm) long, 18 inches (46 cm) wide, and 20 inches (51 cm) high. If you plan to house multiple cockatiels, you’ll need a larger cage to accommodate their social needs.

Diet & Nutrition

A balanced diet is crucial for your cockatiel’s health. Provide a high-quality commercial cockatiel seed mix as the foundation of their diet. Supplement this with fresh fruits and vegetables, such as apples, carrots, and broccoli. Avoid avocados, as they are toxic to birds. Also, offer your cockatiel a variety of healthy treats, like nuts, seeds, and sprouts.

Enrichment & Exercise

Cockatiels are intelligent and active birds that require mental and physical stimulation. Provide your bird with a variety of toys to keep them entertained. Rotate toys regularly to prevent boredom. Encourage your cockatiel to exercise by providing a safe space outside the cage for supervised playtime. You can also train your bird to perform tricks or interact with you using positive reinforcement techniques.

Socialisation & Taming

Cockatiels are social creatures that thrive on interaction with their human companions. Spend quality time with your bird daily, talking to them, petting them, and playing with them. This will help build a strong bond between you and your feathered friend. If you have a young cockatiel, start taming them early on. This involves gentle handling and positive reinforcement.

Health & Grooming

Regular health checks are essential to ensure your cockatiel remains healthy. Schedule annual visits to an avian veterinarian for check-ups and vaccinations. Keep your bird’s cage clean by cleaning it regularly and replacing dirty water and food dishes. Also, groom your cockatiel regularly by trimming their nails and cleaning their feathers.
